How to Make a Rope Bowl

Rope Bowl

You always need another useful bowl to put stuff in. These look great in different sizes and you can mix and match the colours of sewing threads used to stitch the bowl together.

They also make beautiful and useful gifts too.

To make the bowl you will need:

  • Macrame rope/ cotton cording

  • Denim sewing machine needles

  • Thread

  • Tweezers

  • Sewing machine that sews a zig zag stitch.

  • Use an open toe machine foot if you have one so you can see what you are stitching more clearly.

The bowls are easy to make, but starting the coil is a little tricky.

To make the base.

Start by coiling the rope clockwise around itself, with the rope on the right hand side. Pin in place to hold it together.

Using a zig zag stitch, back stitch first to secure your stitching. Make sure that you are catching both sides of the rope coil, you may have to practice this to see how large a zig zag you will need to use. I used tweezers to help get all the ends of the rope under the machine foot.

Sew slowly. If it gets stuck a bit help it along with the tweezers. You will need to keep lifting the foot and moving the coil around to get a tight curve to begin with but this gets easier and quicker as the coil gets larger.

Keep the coil tight and flat. If you run out of cord and need to join a new cord in, just backstitch the old cord and lay the new one in, backstitch again and carry on. If it looks a little messy, don’t worry too much it will be sewn in the next circle round.

We sewed an approx 14cm diameter base.

Build up the sides of the bowl. With the bowl still under the machine foot, tilt the base and carry on stitching. Keep it at a consistent angle. You can change the thread colours at any time. Just back stitch to secure at each change of colou

To finish. Either pin the end in place and tuck inside the bowl. Back stitch a few times to secure. Or you can make a loop, pin in place and increase the zig zag stitch to hold it all together. Backstitch a few times to secure.
