Fabric Pattern Weights

Fabric Pattern Weights

This is a wonderful way to use up your fabric scraps.

Whenever you make up a dressmaking project there are always some useable pieces of fabric left over. This is a great scrap busting project.

You can also make a whole set and gift them to a friend who sews.

Each pattern weight will need the following:

  • Fabric 10cm (4 inches) x 20cm (8 inches)

  • Interfacing (optional)

  • Narrow ribbon 6cm (optional)

  • Lentils, rice or split peas for filling about 100gms or 4oz per pattern weight

The measurements above include 1cm Seam Allowance

I used lots of different linens scraps and made 10 pattern weights in total but you can use most woven fabrics and make as many as you like.

We recommend interfacing if using lighter weight fabrics. This also helps prevent the odd grain of rice or lentil from escaping.

Cut your fabric and ribbons to size.

Fold the ribbon in half and pin to the right side of one of the short sides of your rectangular fabric about 2cm away from the top edge.

Fold the short ends with the right sides together and stitch two sides of the square. Leave one side open to fill with lentils. Clip the corners and turn right side out.

Press the seam allowance towards the wrong side on the open edge.

To create a pyramid rather than just a square, centre the seam in the middle of the open edge and finger press the sides.

Fill ¾ full with lentils.

Close the gap by either slip stitching by hand or pin and edge stitch using the sewing machine.

Make as many pattern weights as you need from all sorts of different fabrics.

Don't forget to share your own pattern weights with me on Social Media.

Hi. I hope this finds you in good health and good spirits. I have discovered you quite late I’m afraid. Actually through scrubs stuff. Which is why I am writing. I have not joined clothcutter’s cutting room. I have been looking everywhere for the “unisex scrubs pattern pdf” It was free and by Sewmesomething…which was you. You might think the pattern is everywhere and easy to find. but the opposite is true. That was 2020 maybe, but now I think it might actually have been scrubbed from the internet. That might be something you were forced to do for legal reasons even though it was a charitable pdf. How sad. I have looked all through the clothcutter collection as I was ever so happy to see you say you had secured your intellectual property, but alas that pdf is not in the collection. I do hope YOU still have it, as I’m sure it helped so many people. It would be a nice keepsake for you at least. If you know how I may obtain the pdf (for personal use, not for any profit), I would appreciate your help finding it. If not, I hold no ill will. I have also looked through TheFoldLine, but there too it seems a lot of 2020 is missing. Drat, but oh well. Nothing to lose by writing you and asking. I have watched your most excellent tutorial on sewing the scrubs, you are indeed a wonderful teacher and resource. I thank you for that. I wish you well, regardless of any reply. Best wishes.

Have been with you from begining and so glad you have now found your feet again! Always used pins on your patterns etc and never got round to making weights but thanks a million, they are brilliant to make and use. I have learnt It’s never too late

Brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing. I hate wasting any scraps & professional weights are expensive to buy in any quantity
