How to Make a Twisted Head Band

How to Make a Twisted Head Band

Twisted Headband

Another fabulous scrap busting project to use up your leftover fabric. This works well well with jersey or light weight knit fabrics as you will need the stretch from the fabric to keep the head band in place.

You can make these to give away or add them to a lovely home Spa Day Set,

To make the headband you will need:

  • 2 Jersey fabric  strips measuring 17cm (W) x 56cm-61cm (L). Length is determined by your head circumference. (Measure head circumference and minus 2.5cm = length of jersey)
  • Pins and thread

Step One

Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides together and pin. Stitch along the long edge and turn right sides out. Do the same with the second piece.

Move the seam into the centre and give it a light press.

Lay the pieces across one another- ensure the first one is laid wrong side up, lay the second piece across so it forms a cross but this should be right side up- ensure right sides are together.

Step Two

Fold over the pieces so that their short ends are together and their wrong sides are together. You now have a twist in the centre.

Step Three

Bring the 4 ends up together (but don't twist them) so that all raw edges meet. You should think of these as pieces 1-4.

Step Four

Pin 2-3 near the top of the raw edge ( the middle two ends).

Pin 1-2 further down - just to hold then in place.

Step Five

Let go of piece number 4 so that it hangs down loose, then bring it up to the front to join piece number 1. Ensure the right sides are together.

Step Six

Pin near the top of the raw edge.

Step Seven

Sew these together along the raw edges using a 1cm seam allowance and trim back to about 0.5cm. Leave the middle pin in which was pinned further down.

Step Eight

Open out both bands and flip one side over so that the wrong sides are together. Line up the seam lines and arrange the seam allowance so they lie either side of the seam line (this is called 'nesting') which reduces the bulk.

Step Nine

Sew with a straight stitch down the same seam line.

Now you can take the middle pin out and arrange the twist in the centre.
