Developing your own patterns from a fitted foundation

You’ve taken the time to draft your basic blocks. They fit, they work — but now you’re wondering what to do with them.

Beyond the Basic Blocks is a three-day creative pattern cutting intensive designed to help you turn your existing blocks into original, wearable patterns — with clarity, confidence, and a process you can repeat again and again.

This workshop is about understanding how design grows from fit, and how small, informed changes lead to garments that really work for your body.

What you’ll be doing over three days

Working from your own bodice, skirt or trouser blocks, you’ll learn how to:

  • Manipulate darts with intention

  • Use cut-and-spread techniques to create shape and volume

  • Develop style lines, seams and design details

  • Balance proportion, fit and movement

  • Translate ideas into logical, sewable patterns

You’ll be guided step by step, with demonstrations followed by supported practical work — and plenty of time to ask questions and refine your ideas.

What you’ll leave with

By the end of the three days, you’ll have:

  • A finished pattern developed from your own block

  • A clear understanding of why it works

  • A repeatable method for developing future designs

  • Greater confidence to experiment without fear of “ruining” your blocks

Most people leave feeling a real shift - from guessing and hoping, to designing with intention.

Who this workshop is for

This workshop is ideal if you:

  • Already have a basic block that fits you

  • Want to design your own clothes rather than rely on commercial patterns

  • Feel stuck at the “I’ve got a block… now what?” stage

This is not a beginner workshop. You’ll need a working knowledge of basic pattern cutting and block drafting.

How the workshop is taught

  • Small group (maximum 6 people)

  • Clear demonstrations followed by guided practice

  • One-to-one support as needed

  • Calm, focused studio environment

What’s included

  • Three full days of expert teaching and support

  • Studio tools and equipment

  • Pattern paper and drafting materials

  • Tea, coffee, and biscuits
