Towelling Bath Mitt and Soap Holder
We try to be as ‘green’ as we can in our house. I much prefer to use bars of cleanser or soap in the shower as opposed to plastic bottles of shower gel. But here are always the last bits of soap that get left that are difficult to grab hold of. So though this might be the perfect project to help me make the most of even those last teeny bits of soap.
You can also reuse any old towels that you may have to make a batch of them for yourself or to give away as lovely handmade gifts - particularly if you include a bar of some deliciously scented handmade soap as well.
You will need:
Roughly 2 x A4 pieces of fabric to make one mitt
Plus another rectangle 10cm x 15cm for the soap pocket
Approximately 20 - 25 cm of narrow elastic
10cm of twill tape or ribbon
Pins or clips
How to make your bath mitt
Using the template cut out two pieces of towelling and the rectangle for the pocket as well as the lengths of elastic and ribbon you will need.
Hem or neaten one long edge of the pocket piece. I have just used a standard overlocked edge to neaten the pocket top.
Place the pocket piece on top of one of the mitt pieces so that the right sides are together. The remaining raw edge of the pocket should be at the top and approximately 6cm up from the bottom edge of the mitt. (The pocket will get folded up after the bottom is stitched).
Sew across the raw edge of the pocket with a narrow seam.
Fold the pocket back up so the row of stitching is inside the pocket and the neatened edge of the pocket is now at the top. Pin in place.
Mark a line about 3cm up from the bottom edge on the wrong sides of both mitt pieces.
Fold the twill tape or ribbon in half and place about 1.5cm up from the bottom edge of the mitt. So the raw edges just hang over the raw edge of the mitt and the loop is inside the mitt.
Place the two mitt pieces with the right sides together and sew around the curved outline, leaving the bottom edge open.
Neaten or hem the bottom edge in the round. Make sure you do not catch the ribbon loop.
Cut the narrow elastic so it fits around your wrist but it's easy to slip over your hand. usually 20 - 25cm will fit most people.
On the wrong side of the mitt, following the marked line, attach the narrow elastic. You can use a stretch stitch, zigzag or triple step zigzag.
Stretch the elastic slightly as you go and overlap the ends of the elastic when you reach your starting point.
Turn the mitt through to the right side and gently steam it flat.
You can make the mitt as part of a Spa Day Set or just as a thing of beauty on its own.
