A Little Detour in My MA Work…

A Little Detour in My MA Work…

As part of my MA in Sustainable Fashion, I’ve been exploring how stories, land, and textiles connect, and rather unexpectedly, that exploration led me down a rather different country lane.

While researching local fibre systems and the history of flax in Warwickshire, a short folktale began to take shape. I hadn’t planned to write anything fictional at all, but it turned out to be a useful way of thinking about how the land “remembers” the materials we once grew and worked with and how far modern fashion has drifted from those roots.

The story centres on a Maker walking an old field at dusk, noticing the traces of what once was, and beginning to consider what could be revived. It’s a simple piece, more reflective than fanciful, and it’s helped me frame the next stage of my MA: understanding how narrative can support new, community-rooted textile systems.

If you’re curious, I’ve shared the full folktale on Substack - along with a bit more context about why it appeared and where it might lead.

I’d love to know what you think, especially if you’ve ever felt a tug of connection to a place, a craft, or a material without quite knowing why.
