There’s a strange stillness that follows the end of something truly special.
Everything that was moved around to accommodate the graduation has been returned to its usual place, the studio is tidy and the calico toiles and pattern paper are in bags for recycling, but there’s an echo of laughter and conversation still hanging in the air.
That’s how it feels now that this year’s Diploma course has come to an end.
After months of working alongside a group of amazing women, guiding them through pattern cutting, draping, fitting, and design development, it’s impossible not to feel both full and a little bit empty at the same time.
Full, because of the pride and joy I feel having watched them grow in confidence and creativity.
Empty, because I’ll miss those familiar faces, those shared cups of tea, and those “lightbulb” moments when something suddenly clicks.
This particular group has been something truly special.
There’s been so much joy and laughter along the way, the kind that bubbles up unexpectedly in the middle of a fitting or during a tricky demo that turns out beautifully after all. The group dynamic just worked – supportive, encouraging, and full of generosity. Everyone brought their own unique energy, and somehow it all came together into a space that felt safe, inspiring, and alive with creativity.
It’s been my absolute privilege to work with them and to be part of their journey. And I’m also deeply grateful to them because they’ve helped pull me out of a very dark place. Their warmth, humour and kindness have reminded me how powerful it is to be surrounded by good people doing good, creative things. I’ve felt myself growing alongside them in confidence, in positivity, and in belief that this work truly matters.
And now, as I look toward the start of the next Diploma course, there’s that familiar blend of nostalgia and excitement again.
The end of one chapter always makes space for the beginning of another.
Every group teaches me something new – about how people learn, about the challenges they face, and about how to build a truly nurturing creative environment. Reflecting back on what worked so beautifully this time helps me shape the next course even better; refining, evolving, and bringing in new ideas to keep the learning fresh and inspiring.
Because that’s what creativity really is, isn’t it?
An ongoing cycle of making, reflecting, improving, and beginning again.
So yes – it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to this group. But it’s also wonderful to know that they’ll keep creating, keep questioning, and keep sewing and that soon, a new set of curious minds will walk through the studio doors ready to start their own journey.
Here’s to endings that make way for new beginnings.
And to the joy, laughter, and learning we share along the way.
